Im <a href="Tasmanien" title="Tasmanien">Tasmanien</a> der 1990er Jahre lebt Nitram, ein <a href="Anagramm" title="Anagramm">Anagramm</a> für <a href="Martin_Bryant" title="Martin Bryant">Martin Bryant</a>, allein bei seinen Eltern, und verbringt die Zeit zwischen Einsamkeit und Frustrationen. Als Gärtner lernt er Helen kennen, eine exzentrische Erbin, die allein mit ihren Tieren lebt. Gemeinsam bauen sie sich ein Leben abseits der Gesellschaft auf, und erstmals empfindet der junge Mann Interesse für jemanden. Doch als Helen auf tragische Weise ums Leben kommt, wird Nitram wiederum vereinsamt und wuterfüllt. Im April 1996 tötet er beim <a href="Massaker_von_Port_Arthur_(Australien)" title="Massaker von Port Arthur (Australien)">Massaker</a> von <a href="Port_Arthur_(Tasmanien)" title="Port Arthur (Tasmanien)">Port Arthur</a> 35 Menschen.
